Chapter Eleven

Sister Search

I held my breath waiting for Finn to rip the coral necklace off. Waiting for the disgust. Waiting for him to show he didn’t care.

He didn’t move for a second. Then, he reached across the table and grabbed my hand.

His face stiffened. “I don’t care what necklace it is. Whether it’s real or not.” His cold tone threaded with a hint of reasonableness. “You gave it to me. So, it means a lot. To me.”

Wow. Point made.

“Really?” I so wanted to believe him. My life had been turned upside down and he was my only solid anchor.

“Really.”

I hated clingy girls. Always believed I’d be independent and strong and make my own decisions. That I would never rely on a guy. And yet here I was relying on Finn. For everything.

I felt adrift in a lonely sea on land. A sea of people who knew nothing about me and my world. A sea of weird beliefs and even weirder creations. A sea of strange food.

The waiter set a plastic basket in front of me and one in front of Finn. The hamburger I recognized from our excursions to the beach. Humans would cook them on campfires. I didn’t know what the whitish-yellow stick things were.

I held one up and cocked a brow.

“French fries.” Finn picked a fry up and took a hard bite obviously still a bit mad.

I didn’t feel much like eating, but I nibbled. The fry was good. Crunchy-hard on the outside and soft on the inside. Kind of like Finn.

I was relying on him for food, housing, and advice. Just like human clothes, dependence didn’t feel right on my skin. Even if I wasn’t a princess I’d been raised to act like one. I had to begin to stand on my own two feet.

Finn ate in silence. I watched and brewed. Brewed about my current situation of being dependent and my future. Brewed about Finn. Brewed about my sisters. We couldn’t hang around and wait for things to happen. I had this homing beacon that told me that at least one of my half-sisters was near. We had to find her.

“I think we should split up to find the other two sisters.”

“W-what?” His mouth hung open with the hamburger half way there.

“I sensed another sister in that smoothie shop down the street.” I hurried on before losing my nerve. “I’ll start my search there. You can use your resources to search for the other sister.”

“Found her.” He pointed at me.

I shook my head showing my disapproval of his sarcasm. “Maybe you still believe I’m Coral, but I don’t. I need to feel useful. Feel like I’m contributing.”

“I promised to protect you.”

“I can take care of myself.”

The doubt in his glance hurt more than any words. “I think—”

I held up my hand in an imperial way. “We can cover more ground if we separate. People you know might not want to talk with me around.” I saw the truth of that statement reflected in his expression. “As The Seer, I don’t want to use my abilities for evil as expected.
